Lawrence H. Wessels, 75, of Hazleton, Iowa died Wednesday May 16, 2012 at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence, Iowa

Lawrence was born on April 27, 1937 in Independence, Iowa the son of Adolph F. and Johanna M. (Rothfuss) Wessels. He was a 1955 graduate of the Independence High School, and then attended Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa. On October 9, 1960 he married LaVelle J. Hertzberg in Independence, Iowa. The couple farmed near Hazleton, Iowa and Lawrence was involved in Tiling, Electrical and Plumbing and worked for the John Deere Company in Waterloo, Iowa for a short period.

He was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church serving on many church councils and committees. He loved to fish, hunt,trap shooting, and playing pool.

He is surviuved by his wife LaVelle Wessels, Hazleton, Iowa, three children; Tim (Stephanie) Wessels, Big Bend, Wisconsin, Brenda (Dave) Robu, Helenville, Wisconsin, and Malinda (Rory) Higgins, Swisher, Iowa, one grandson, a brother Rev. Bob (Marge) Wessels, Lisbon, IA., and a sister; Linda (Roger) Cole, Alexandria, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Larry Wessels in 1988, and a brother Harry John Wessels.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Independence, IA., with Rev. Kurt Bockoven officiating.

Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence, Iowa.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence and from 9 A.M. till Services Saturday at the church. A Military Memorial Service will be held at 7 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.
