Irene Slaughter, 94 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Sunday, June 2, 2013, at ACBM Rehab. Independence – West in Independence. She was born on July 4, 1918, in Sumner Township of Buchanan County, Iowa, the daughter of Mert and Hattie (Galland) Boyack. She graduated from high school in Independence and then earned her teaching credentials at the Normal School in Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught near her home in Sumner Township for several years. On November 12, 1937, she and Leo Alexander Slaughter were married at the Presbyterian parsonage in Independence. They farmed in Buchanan County. He preceded her in death in 1993. Mrs. Slaughter also was a receptionist and assistant in the office of A.G. Kegler, D.D.S. and later in the office of L.J. Flage, M.D. In her later years she was a clerk and bookkeeper at the Independence Sale Barn. Mrs. Slaughter was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence. She enjoyed spending time out of doors on day trips to Fontana Park and Backbone State Park.

Mrs. Slaughter is survived by her son, Mercian (Diane) Slaughter of Independence.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 sister, and 1 daughter-in-law, Bette Slaughter.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the White Funeral Home in Independence with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5th, at the funeral home.
