John Joseph Richardson age 94, formerly of Lamont, IA, died Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at the Buchanan County Long Term Care Center in Independence, Iowa.

He was born March 9, 1921, southwest of Aurora, Iowa, the son of George Washington Richardson and Nellie Josephine Sherren Richardson. John graduated from Aurora High School with the class of 1938. In 1943 he entered the U.S. Army, serving three years during WWII with the 308th Airborne Squadron. He served in the South Pacific, Dutch East Indies, Northern Philippines, and New Guinea. He was honorably discharged on January 7, 1946.

On October 7th, 1943, he was united in marriage to Velma Marie Crow at Hannibal, Missouri. He spent 53 years farming on the family farm near Aurora. In July, 2006, they moved to the Oakview Apartments in Independence, and on March 14, 2014 John moved to the Long Term Care at BCHC.

John was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church, the Palmer-Scharff American Legion Post in Aurora, the Richardson-Jakway Foundation and also served as a Buchanan County Hospice Volunteer.

Survivors include his wife Velma of Independence; four daughters: Judy (Leslie) Becker of Lawtey, FL; Josephine Schipper of Parkersburg, IA; Jane (Charles) Watson of Hazleton, IA; and Jean (Fred) Hilker of Spokane, WA; ten grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren; two sisters –in-law: Gladys Richardson and Donna Crow;and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two sisters: Kate Margaret Richardson and Jane Evaline Richardson; his brother, Judson Richardson; and one son-in-law Stanley W. Schipper.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Aurora Methodist Church with Pastor Allen Craft officiating. Interment with military rites will be at the Madison Township Cemetery south of Aurora.

Friends may call from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, Oct. 23, 2015 at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop and after 9:30 A.M. Saturday at the Church in Aurora.
