James T. “Ted” Martin, Jr., 74, of Independence, Iowa died Wednesday evening, October 1, 2014 at the Grandview Healthcare Center in Oelwein, Iowa.

Ted was born on May 13, 1940 the son of James T. and Caroline M. (Stauss) Martin, Sr. He was a 1958 graduate of the Independence High School, and attended the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA., and the Sioux Falls College in Sioux Falls, SD. He was married for 17 years to Arla Anderson. Ted worked with his parents at the Elm Park Plumbing, Heating and Electric in Independence, Iowa till his retirement in the early 1980’s. During his retirement Ted did upholstery/furniture and carpentry work. On December 31, 1982 he was married to Eula S. (Crowe) Takacs in Independence, Iowa and the couple made their home in Independence.

Ted enjoyed singing, having coffee with his friends, woodworking, and loved spending time with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Eula Martin, Independence, IA., two daughters; Amber (Lance) Green, Iowa City, IA., Shawnelle (Thomas) Kapper, Madison, WI, two step children; Debra Hensley, Springdale, AK, David J. (Ann) McQuitty, Manahan Beach, CA, three grandchildren; Kieran, Eric and Merryl Green, a brother; David (Karen) Martin, Marion, IA, six nieces and nephews, and six great nieces and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister; Carol (Bill) Mashek.

Memorial services will be held at 11 AM Monday, October 6, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church, Independence, IA with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Inurnment will be in the Garden Of Memories, Waterloo, IA. The family will receive friends from 10 AM till Services Monday at the Church.
