John Lester Michels was born August 10, 1919 at the family farm near Stanley, Iowa to Elizabeth Weber Michels and Peter Michels. He was the second oldest of six children. He attended Stanley school. He married Mary Josephine Brady on August 29, 1940. This union was blessed with four children, Joseph, Linda, John and Jerry Michels.

John and Mary lived and farmed in the Oelwein area for many years. Their children all attended and graduated from Sacred Heart high school and the couple was long time members of Sacred Heart Parish.

John loved the land and farming. He also loved to keep busy with trucking up till just before his ninetieth birthday. He lived at the family farm until recently moving to Arlington Place and later Mercy Living Plus.

He is survived by his daughter Linda (Scott) Grant of Logan, Iowa and his son John (Karen/Nickey) Michels of Oelwein; Grandchildren Tony (Michelle) Michels, Chad Michels, Michelle (Lavell) Stewart, Tracy Schaeffer (special friend Gary), Cory (Sarah) Michels, Nichole Bustillo Michels, Elly (Brad) Steffen, and Megan (Scott) Rima; nineteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Kathyrn Miller of Independence and Ruth Kerns of Fairbank, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, sons Joseph and Jerry, sisters Christina Brady, Mary Elizabeth Milbach, and brother Robert Michels and his parents.

Visitation: 3:00pm to 7:00pm Sunday, February 27, 2011 at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein with a Rosary Service at 4:00pm and Scripture Service at 6:00pm.

Services: 11:00am Monday, February 28, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein with Father Harry Koelker officiating and burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein.
