Thomas Joseph Short was born November 30, 1944, at Independence, Iowa, the son of Patrick Joseph and Dorothy Clara Elvidge Short.

Tom was united in marriage to Judy Carradus on December 8, 1962, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop, Iowa. To this union were born four children: Cari, Michael, Mark, and Amy. They farmed in the Kiene neighborhood and later near Manchester, Iowa. Tom and Judy owned and operated Three Seasons Lawn Care in rural Masonville, Iowa, for six years. He then worked as a field manager for Wapsie Valley and later for Swiss Valley, until his retirement in 2006. Being an active outdoorsman all his life, Tom was an avid hunter and fisherman. Golf was his favorite sport, which he enjoyed playing often.

At 66 years of age, Tom entered into his eternal rest on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa, following a sudden illness.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Survivors include his four children: Cari (Craig) Wright of Jesup; Michael Short of Manchester; Mark Short of Ryan; and Amy Roling of Manchester;Judy Short (Kehrli) of Manchester; seven grandchildren: Megan (Josh) Polaschek, Molly Weber, Chase Wright, Austin Short, Mason Short, Chloe Roling, and Preston Roling; two brothers: Richard (Arduth) Short and Don (Janet) Short, both of Winthrop; two sisters: Beverly (Dennis) Smith of The Village, FL; and Ann (Haven) Speckman of Farmington, MN; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, February 18, 2011, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Winthrop with Father Donald J. Plamondon officiating and the St. Patrick Choir providing the music. Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at Winthrop. Casketbearers will be: Dave Hogan, Jim Schmitz, Ray Marbach, Tim Hilby, John Sullivan, and Billy McEnany. Honorary bearers will be Kenny Atwater, Merle Mangold, and Pete Hilby,in memoriam.

Friends may call from 4 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. on Thursday, February 17, 2011, at Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop. A scripture service will be held at 7:30 P.M.
