John W. Sanborn, 75, of Oelwein, Iowa died on Friday morning, January 28, 2011 at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters in Oelwein.

Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Christ United Presbyterian Church, Oelwein, with Rev. Charis Combs-Lay officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein and for one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.

Public Masonic Service: 6:00 P.M. on Monday at the funeral home by the Oelwein Hebron Masonic Lodge #374 A.F. & A.M. Military Service: 7:00 P.M. on Monday at the funeral home by the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post #9.

Interment: Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, Iowa. Memorial Fund: Oelwein Veterans Memorial Park and Christ United Presbyterian Church Carillon.

John Whitehead Sanborn was born on October 11, 1935 at Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Edward Byron & Florence Louise (Whitehead) Sanborn.

John lived at Hazleton and Oelwein and graduated from Hazleton High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Intrepid during the Korean War. John was united in marriage to Constance Lou Crandall on September 9, 1957 at Christ United Presbyterian Church with Rev. L.W. Hauter officiating. They moved to Oelwein where John worked at Seig Auto Parts for six years. John was then a letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office for 33 years, retiring in 1991. Following retirement John worked at Reid Auto Sales in Hazleton and Barron Motor Company in Oelwein.

John was a member of Christ United Presbyterian Church, Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post #9, Oelwein American Legion Honor Guard, Oelwein Veterans Memorial Park Committee, Hebron Masonic Lodge #374 A.F. & A.M and the Oelwein Board of Adjustment. He was formerly Worshipful Master of the Hebron Masonic Lodge #374 A.F. & A.M. in 1981. He was also formerly a member of the El Kahir Shrine, Vintage Autos and Hospital Dads.

John is survived by his Wife: Connie Sanborn of Oelwein; Daughter: Deborah J. (Gary) Hackman of Decorah; Jon A. Sanborn of Janesville, Wisconsin & Scott E. (Sandi) Sanborn of Alexandria, Virginia; 4 Grandchildren: Nicholas (Nikki) England, Brandyn Sanborn, Allyson Sanborn & Trevor Sanborn; 1 Step Granddaughter: Crystal (Jeremy) Soppe; Sister: Jane Staack of Oelwein; Brother: Richard E. (Pat) Sanborn of Olin and Several Nieces & Nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father (John Brown), 2 sisters (Margaret Turner & Phyllis Ann Gallagher) and 2 brothers-in-law (Lyle Staack & James Gallagher).
