Helen Marie Reck was born August 23, 1933, at Winthrop, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Lena Voland Jones. Attending the Winthrop schools, she graduated with the High School class of 1950.

Helen was united in marriage to Donald Reck on June 12, 1953, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, Iowa. After Don was discharged from the service they moved to the Reck Farm northeast of Winthrop. To this union were born three children: Steve, Doug, and Jan. In 1993, they built and moved to their home in Winthrop.

For over 35 years, Helen was employed in the banking industry, working at Peoples’ State Bank in Winthrop and continuing at Citizen’s State Bank, after the name changed, until retiring as Vice-President in 2002. Being active in the community all her life, she was a member of the Buffalo Creek Golf Course, their couple card club, the American Legion Auxiliary of Winthrop, East Buchanan School Board treasurer, and was currently a member of the Winthrop City Council. She loved watching sporting events, especially the ones her children and grandchildren participated in, as well as the Iowa Hawkeyes.

At the age of 77 years, Helen entered into her eternal rest on Sunday, January 23, 2011, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, Iowa, following a lengthy illness.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her brother, Richard “Dick” Jones; and her sister, Marjorie Pierce.

Survivors include her husband, Don of Winthrop; her two sons: Steve (Sally) Reck of Marion, IA, and Doug (LuAnn) Reck of Winthrop; her daughter, Jan (Rob) Turner of Independence; seven grandchildren: Amanda (Matt) Thoendel, Kirsten (Justin) Reck, Andrew Reck, Ben (Amy) Reck, Randy (Nicole) Reck, Nathan Reck, and Janson Turner; five great grandchildren: Hunter Schulte, Riley Reck, Owen Reck, Gavin Reck, and Piper Reck; her sister, Evelyn Cook of Independence; and many relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 4 P.M. to 8 P.M. Monday, January 24, 2011, at Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop, and from 9:30 A.M. until the service time at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. Pastor Kurt Bockoven will officiate and Janet Dopp will provide the music. Casketbearers will be her grandchildren: Amanda Thoendel, Kirsten Reck, Andrew Reck, Ben Reck, Randy Reck, Nathan Reck, and Janson Turner.

Burial will be in Fremont Township Cemetery north of Winthrop.

A memorial fund has been established in Helen’s name.

The Fawcett Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
