Ellen Virginia Foland, 82 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, December 24, 2010, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa, following a sudden illness.

She was born on July 31, 1928, in Hopkinton, Iowa, the daughter of Alva Nelson and Leona Margaret (House) Smith.

She graduated from high school in Independence. On March 10, 1947, she and Doyle (Barney) Dean Foland were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, Iowa. Mrs. Foland held clerical positions with the Independence Area Chamber of Commerce and the Independence Public Library before retiring. She was also an active volunteer. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence, the Buchanan County Historical Society (past president), the Buchanan County Genealogical Society (charter member), the Buchanan County Pioneer Cemetery Board, and the Hazleton Quilting Circle. She did research for the publication of Buchanan County, Iowa, Cemeteries – 1980, and was on the committee that produced the History of Buchanan County, Iowa – 1990. She also wrote historical articles for area newspapers. In 1981, she received the Behind the Scenes Award and in 1982, she received the Governor’s Leadership Award. She received the Mayor’s Volunteer Award in 2006.

Mrs. Foland is survived by her husband of 63 years, Barney, 2 grandsons, Jonathon (Maddie) Cafferty of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Daniel Foland of Chicago, Illinois, 1 great granddaughter, Melissa R. Cafferty, and 1 sister, Lois Powell of Long View, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Linda Cafferty, her son, David Foland, and 1 brother.

Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. John Hougen officiating.

Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
