Independence - Benjamin Walter Wheatley, 95 years old, of Marietta, Georgia, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, October 25, 2010, at the Marietta Health and Rehabilitation Center in Marietta, Georgia, following a short illness.

He was born on October 11, 1915, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Benjamin Walter and Eda (Pedersen) Wheatley.

He attended school in Marne, Iowa. On August 20, 1938, he and the former Helga Amanda Lange were married in Atlantic, Iowa. Early in their married life, they moved to the Quasqueton, Iowa, area to farm. Ben was well known around Winthrop as he did custom combining for farmers in the area. Ben was also a 4-H leader. In 1972, Helga and Ben established the B & H Mobile Home Park in Quasqueton. Helga preceded him in death in January 1982. On June 16, 1985, Ben married Margery Ellen McCright in Rowley, Iowa. During their 23 years of marriage, they enjoyed traveling, ballroom and square dancing, and were active at the Independence Senior Citizen Center. Margery preceded him in death in October 2008. After her death, he moved to be nearer family members.

Mr. Wheatley is survived by 3 sons, Ronald (Frances) Wheatley of North Augusta, South Carolina, Richard (Ruthie) Wheatley of San Diego, California, and Benjamin (Beverly) Wheatley III of Smyrna, Georgia, and 3 daughters, Jannes Andersen of Appomattox, Virginia, Carol (Jim) Bates of Kountze, Texas, and Brenda (Don) Norman of Adairsville, Georgia. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, and 1 sister, Robbie (Dale) Andersen of Oelwein, Iowa.

In addition to both of his wives, he was preceded in death by 1 great grandson, Dustin Bates, 1 brother, Robert Wheatley, and 1 sister, Dearie Clemsen.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 8, 2010, at the Quasqueton Cemetery in Quasqueton, Iowa, with Rev. David Bissell officiating.

Friends may call for visitation from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov.7th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
