William J. "Bill" Ziegler

FAIRBANK — William J. "Bill" Ziegler, 84, of Fairbank, died Friday, Oct. 29, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein, following a short illness.

He was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Clinton, Ill., son of Jacob Frank and Vera Harter Ziegler. He married Shirley J. Cannaven on March 10, 1951, in Chicago.

He graduated from Dwight High School in 1944 and joined the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the University of Illinois in Champaign after an honorable discharge. He was an insurance salesman and field agent for Iowa Mutual. Mr. Ziegler joined Mark Hintz of Hintz-Ziegler Insurance and bought Oelwein Tour and Travel.

Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Shari (Jeff) Weeden of Cleveland and Marsha (Robin) Shepherd of Vieques, Puerto Rico; a son, Bill Jr. (Mary Beth) of Clermont; six grandchildren, Jamie Jo (Matt) Wahlert, Jacob Weeden, Cariad Shepherd, Eric Shepherd, Billy (Kelly) Ziegler III and Hattie (Andrew) Ring; three great-grandchildren, Beau and Lilee Wahlert and Josie Ziegler; and family pet, Lucy.

Preceded in death by: a sister, Betty Gay; a brother-in-law, Bob Gay; and his parents, Jacob and Vera.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Oelwein, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery at a later date.

Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Geilenfeld Funeral Home, where there will be a 7 p.m. military service led by Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9.

Memorial fund: has been established.
