Donnel Ainslee O’BRIEN

Donnell Ainslee O’Brien was born at Lamont, Iowa Jul. 16, 1906. He attended the public school and followed the occupation of his father(William), as plasterer.

His home the past six years had been at Santa Cruz, Cal. He was inducted into the army at Monterey, Cal. on March 6, 1942 and sent to Sheppard Field, Tex. where on May 29, he was stricken with the affliction which on Nov. 5, 1942 caused his death at the age of 36 years 3 months and 20 days at O’Reily General Hospital, Springfield, Mo. He gave the last full measure of devotion to his country. Donnel, as a young boy, was industrious, and lived a life of integrity, helpful and thoughtful of others.

The community, wishing in some way to convey their respect and do honor to this soldier of World War II, who laid down his life for peace everlasting extends sympathy to his children, his mother, brothers, sisters and their families.

Surviving are his children, Verlyn and Donna Rae of Cherokee, his mother, Mrs. Luelia (Wilder) O’Brien of Lamont (Iowa), Fred & Duane of Oakland, Calif., and Jack now in the service at Santa Ana Air Base, Santa Ana: and five sisters, Velda Tarbox of Strawberry Point, Ula Hill, Una Holland and Dorothy Hancock of Des Moines, and Marguerite Rustein of Sioux City.

Military funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at two o’clock from the Haines/Raines funeral home by the members of the American Legion with the Rev. R. E. Hodgkin, pastor of the local Methodist Church officiating. Mrs. Carl Durham sang “No Need of Shadows” and “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” with Mrs. Thos. Rogers accompanying.

Members of the American Legion, acting as pallbearers were Verne Stephenson, Thomas Jackman, George Houser, John Lucey, Carl Durham and Clifford Smith. Interment was made at Campton Cemetery(Lamont, IA).
