Sgt. Franklin M. BROWN

Jesup Ia. – Mr. & Mrs. (Anna Kris) Michael Brown have received word that their son, Sgt. Franklin M. Brown, reported missing in action Jan. 6, 1945, must have lost his life in a combat mission to Omura, Japan.

Records show that an enemy plane made a strike on the B-29 bomber in which Brown was a crew member immediately after bombs had been discharged. About 15 minutes later the right wing broke into flames and the crew advised they were bailing out. The plane was last seen in a vertical bank entering the clouds about forty five miles south of Omura. No member of the crew was reported saved.

Franklin was born Oct. 30, 1919 at Jesup and graduated from Jesup High School in 1937. He entered the army air forces Feb. 11, 1943, and received training as an aerial gunner, leaving for overseas in June 1944, to serve in the India-China-Burma theater. His awards include the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross.

He is survived by his parents; three brothers, Lester, Jesup; Paul, U. S. Army, Robert, U. S. Army in Germany; Mrs. F. J. McCarthy, Station Island N.Y; Joan, at home.
