- Ex-Waterloo Man Killed in Hawaii -

Corp. Malachi J. Cashen, formerly of Waterloo (Ia) was killed when Japanese planes swooped down on Pearl Harbor in the Hawaiian Islands Sunday, according to word received by his sister, Mrs. Howard Wiley, Pine Crest Dairy Farm, He was about 30 years old.

A corporal in the air corps, Cashen was born in Winthrop (Ia) and worked in Waterloo as a shoe clerk for Rex Shoe Store, 102 East Fourth Street.

He spent some years in Waterloo residing in the home of an uncle, John Fitzsimmons, 223 Maple street. And attended St. Mary’s School.

The message said only that the corporal was killed in action and stated no details.

The relatives here said he was believed to have been stationed at (Wheeler Air Field) or near Pearl Harbor.

He had enlisted at Minneapolis Minn. (03DEC1940) and had been in service something over a year they said.

Born (20AUG1907) at Winthrop (Masonville) IA, he was the son of Mr. John H.(Henry) & Mrs. (Gertrude Ann Ringold) Cashen who now reside at Lamont (Ia).

Also surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Raymond Kortemkamp, Lamont, Sister Mary (Bernadine) Malachi, Holy Grove School, Dubuque, Mrs. Mitchell Coke, West Union, and Mrs. Wiley, and five brothers, John Cashen, Maynard, Richard J, Bernard J, and Francis all of Lamont and Ralph of Aurora (Ia).

Margaret A. Cashen, 229 Maple street, is an aunt of the war victim.

On Sunday, 07DEC1941, assigned to the Wheeler Air Field Supply Office. Casualty – gunshot wounds - Purple Heart - U. S. Army Air Corps 15th Pursuit Group, 72nd Pursuit Squadron.
