Independence - Lawrence D. “Larry” Butterfield, 69 years old, of Ft. Myers, Florida, and Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, January 9, 2009, at home in Independence following a short illness.
He was born on March 7, 1939, in Buchanan County, Iowa, the son of Lawrence Willard and Mildred Frances (McGrath) Butterfield. He graduated from high school in Rowley, Iowa, with the Class of 1957. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army. On July 29, 1961, he and the former Irene Kay Cornwell were married at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa. Mr. Butterfield was an owner and operator of Butterfield Chrysler Plymouth Dodge in Independence and other dealerships in Florida. He was a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church and the Wapsipinicon Golf Club in Independence, Iowa, and Blessed Pope John XXIII Catholic Church and Legends Golf Club in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Mr. Butterfield is survived by his wife of 47 years, Irene, 2 daughters, Katrina (Bryan) DeForrest of Cape Coral, Florida, and Kristina Hamilton of Independence, Iowa, and 4 grandchildren, Zachary Hamilton, Garett Hamilton, Casey DeForrest, and Dylan DeForrest. He is also survived by 1 brother, Charles (Kathy) Butterfield of Independence, Iowa, and 2 sisters, Phyllis (Weldon) Polk of Wonewoc, Wisconsin, and Kate (Earl) Marks of Wilton, Iowa, and a Special Family Friend, Loren Hamilton of Independence, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 12, 2009, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa. Rev. Donald Plamondon will be the Celebrant. Casket Bearers will be Bryan DeForrest, Loren Hamilton, Zach Hamilton, Casey DeForrest, Garett Hamilton, and Dylan DeForrest. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 11th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa, where a Vigil Service begins at 4:00 p.m. and a Military Service begins at 7:00 p.m.
A Memorial Fund for local conservation projects has been established at Bank Iowa, 230 1st Str. E., Independence, Iowa 50644.
