INDEPENDENCE — Richard L. “Dick” Cameron, 83, of rural Independence, died Monday, March 10, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, at the First United Methodist Church in Independence, with the Rev. Dennis Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday and after 3 p.m. Thursday at the White Funeral Home in Independence. A military memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. On Thursday, March 13th, there will be a Military Service at 7 p.m. at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
He was born Jan. 17, 1925, in Waterloo, the son of Clifford and Zazelle T. (Campagna) Cameron. He graduated from high school in Independence, with the class of 1942. Following high school, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On Nov. 21, 1948, he and the former Mildred Mae “Millie” Alden were married at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence. They farmed near Independence. Mr. Cameron was also an independent farm equipment dealer and operated Cameron Dirt Sales. He never really retired.
Mr. Cameron was a member of the Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post 30 in Independence. He was formerly a Buchanan County Supervisor and a member of the Buchanan County Fair Board and the Buffalo Creek Golf Club. He was one of the founders of the Independence Saddle Club and he was a member of the Independence Bowling Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Millie; two sons, Craig (Patty) Cameron and Chris (Trisha) Cameron, both of Independence, and one daughter, Connie (Mark) Chase of Independence, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
