Independence - Floyd Edward “Jack” Pilcher, 88 years old, of rural Independence, Iowa, died on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa, following a short illness.

He was born on April 1, 1918, in Cono Township of Buchanan County, Iowa, the son of Ransom Edna and Bertha Effie (Rosencrans) Pilcher. He graduated from the Quasqueton High School, Quasqueton, Iowa, with the Class of 1936.

During World War II, Mr. Pilcher served with the U.S. Army in Europe and North Africa. He was captured and was a POW for 790 days. On June 27, 1945, he and the former Mary Agnes Gorman were married at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 2001.

Mr. Pilcher farmed and performed other agriculture related jobs until he retired in 1980. He and Mrs. Pilcher moved to Marshalltown in 1998. Mr. Pilcher was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, the Knights of Columbus Council #4332, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Hennessey Assembly #0264, the Bechter-Boies V.F.W. Post #2440 (life member), and the Independence Lions Club.

Mr. Pilcher is survived by 4 sons, Charles (Karen) Pilcher of Gales Ferry, CT, James (Ruth) Pilcher of Chandler, AZ, Donald (Martha) Pilcher of Half Moon Bay, CA, and Steven (Vicki) Pilcher of Independence, IA, 3 daughters, Barbara (James) Anderson of Waterloo, IA, Joyce Brown of Wilmington, DE, and Rita (Dale) Walters of Baltic, CT.

He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 2 great great granddaughters, and 1 brother, Carl Pilcher of Warsaw, MO.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son in infancy, 3 sisters, and 1 brother in infancy.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 5, 2007, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa. Fr. Al Vorwald was the Celebrant. Music was provided by Mrs. Leo Schubich, organist, Mrs. Jason Holm, vocal soloist, and the St. John’s Choir.

Casket Bearers were Charles Pilcher, James Pilcher, Don Pilcher, Steve Pilcher, Jim Anderson, and Jason Pilcher. Burial was at 2:00 p.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in Fayette, Iowa.

On Thursday, Jan. 4th, there was a Parish and K.C. Rosary at 3:00 p.m., a Military Service at 7:00 p.m., and a Vigil Service at 8:00 p.m. at the White Funeral Home in Independence.
A Memorial Fund has been established.
