INDEPENDENCE - Craig Zieser, 51, of Independence, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at his home with his family at his side. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence, with the Rev. Aloysius Vorwald officiating. Burial will be held in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. and parish vigil service held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Craig was born June 29, 1956, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Clifford J. and Elizabeth C. (Sheeley) Zieser. He attended school in Urbana and was a 1974 graduate of St. John's Catholic High School in Independence. Following graduation he began his 33-year career with the Independence Post Office as a mail carrier.
Craig loved sports, going to casinos, reading, and hanging out with family and friends. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews and watching their sporting events.
He is survived by his parents, Clifford J. and Elizabeth C. Zieser, Independence; six siblings, Teresa (Gary) Fabert, Cedar Rapids, Kathy (Rick) Vaughn, Cumming, Paul (Becky) Zieser, Independence, Jane Zieser, Ankeny, Kevin (Ann) Zieser, Lodi, Wis., and Kyle (Sarah) Zieser, Independence; a sister-in-law, Sharon Zieser, Independence; 12 nieces and nephews; three great-nephews; and one great-niece.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Zieser; a niece, Amanda Faith; and grandparents, Herman and Mary Zieser and Richard and Ann Sheeley.
His life and his fight with cancer was an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be missed tremendously.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to St. John's School or Church, 209 Fifth Ave. NE, Independence, IA 50644, or to Mercy Hospice of Cedar Rapids, 701 10th St. SE; Cedar Rapids, IA 52403.
The family would especially like to thank the dedicated staff at Oncology Associates of Cedar Rapids, and Mercy Hospice of Cedar Rapids for their care and concern for Craig.
