John Michels, was born June 2, 1832, in Germany, and died November 9, 1917. He came to America at the age of 24 years and in 1861 was married to Miss Catherine Damge at Racine, Wisconsin. Mrs Michels preceded him to the better world by two years and ten months. Eight children were born to this union: Dommie, William, Edward, Peter, Mrs Anna Hull, of Ogema Minnesota; Mrs Lena Nitsch, of Denver, Colorado and the Misses Mary and Margaret, of Hazelton. He is also survived by twenty-four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Mr Michels was one of the pioneer residents, having come soon after his marriage to his farm east of town. He was an honerable and upright citizen, industrious and frugal, and a highly devoted member of St. Mary's Catholic church from wich the funeral was conducted Monday, with Rev. Father Homan in Charge. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery by the side of his wife. The Pallbearers were six nephews : Peter, Fred and Henry Damge, and the Messrs. Frost of Gilbertville, all of whom officiated in the same capacity at the las services for Mrs,. Michels. Besides the pallbearers those present from out of town were a brother-in-law, Nicholas Frost, of Gilbertville, and three nieces, Mrs. Camp, Mrs Jaeger an husband, and Mrs Hulbeck and husband, of Gilbertville, a brother-in-law, John Damge, and Mr. Greeley and daughter Genevieve, of Independence.
