LAMONT - Betty Lou Meehan was born June 19, 1928 at Garber, Iowa, the daughter of (Peter) Dale and Mary Walters Learn. She graduated from Lamont High School with the class of 1945 and continued her education at Allen School of Nursing in Waterloo, graduating as a registered nurse in 1949. She was also certified as an executive nurse administrator and a licensed nursing home administrator.
Betty was united in marriage to Edward T. Meehan on May 23,1950, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lamont. To this union were born four children, Trudy, Kelly, Denise and Brian.
During Betty's nursing career she worked in the office of Dr. Anderson at Strawberry Point, the Delaware County Hospital in Manchester, St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, and Peoples Hospital in Independence from June, 1968 until her retirement in June, 1991. During her years at People's she served as Director of Nursing Services, and later became Administrator of the Care Center. She was a conscientious and hard worker who always wore a smile on her face to the many medical boards and committee's for the hospital, nursing care center, and community organizations such as the Lamont Legion Auxiliary. Betty was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who loved to cook, fish and spend time with her family.
Betty entered into her eternal rest on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007 at the Buchanan County Health Care Center in Independence at the age of 79.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson David Tribbey, a niece, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, and other relatives.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years Ed of Lamont; two daughters, Trudy Meehan of Casper, Wyo. and Denise (Jerry) Tribbey of Horicon, Wis.; two sons, Kelly Meehan of Spring Branch, Texas and Brian "Pete" (Terri) Meehan of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren, Kyle Collins, Chase and Mark Meehan, Paul and Luke Tribbey, Bobbette Davis, Peter "Jake" (Dionne) Meehan, Jesse, Brett and Samantha Meehan; five great grandchildren; her sister Jean Timmons of Colesburg; and other relatives and friends.
A memorial fund in her name has been established. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Lamont with Father Aloysius Vorwald officiating. Casket bearers will be her 10 grand-children. Interment will be in Campton Cemetery east of Lamont.
Friends may call from 3 until 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until service time Thursday at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Lamont.
