HAZLETON - Clarence N. Michael, 99, of Hazleton, died Sunday, Dec. 16,2007 at the Buchanan County Health Center Long Term Care following a short illness.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence, with the Rev. Aloysius J. Vorwald officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.
Clarence was born April 26, 1908, near Rowley, Iowa, the son of Frank L. and Rose A. (Miller) Michael. He married Rita Schmitt on June 7, 1939 at St. John's Catholic Church in Independence. The couple lived on a farm near Hazleton for 58 years. After farming most of his life, he then worked for Riley Construction Co. of Ossian. He was an avid hunter and expert marksman and enjoyed collecting guns.
Survivors include his wife Rita of Independence; a daughter Ellen (Norm) Gillund of South Beloit, Ill.; a son Rich (Judy) Peachtree City, Ga.; a brother Leo Michael of Independence; three granddaughters, Melissa Gillund of Cedar Rapids, Emily Wesche of Peachtree City, and Abbey Michael of Birmingham, Ala.; and a great grandson, Addison of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Laurence Michael and two sisters, Clara Michael and Mary Sands.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Arlington Place, Oelwein, Prairie Hills, Independence, Buchanan County Health Center and Hospice for the wonderful care they provided Clarence.
