HAZLETON - Paul M. Roepke, 62, of Hazleton, died Monday morning, Feb. 5, 2007 at his home after a long illness.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein, with the Rev. Leo Combs-Lay officiating. Burial will be in Hazleton (Fontana Addition) Cemetery at Hazleton.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, 221 N. Frederick, Oelwein, with a military memorial service at 7:30 p.m. by the Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9. Friends may also call after 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
Paul is survived by his wife Susan Roepke of Hazleton; his daughter Jodi (Jim) Sweeney of Farley; three grandchildren, Riley, Ricky and Nicholas Sweeney of Farley; seven sisters, Gladys (John) Higgins of Aurora, Thelma Duckett of Oelwein, Dorothy Knavel of Hazleton, Elaine (Rhea) Rockwood of Janesville, Marilyn (Gene) Medberry of Elgin, Judy (Mark) Lang of Cedar Rapids and Alice Roepke Vega (Michael Vega) of Central City and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Jeff in 1986; two brothers Jerry and James and an infant sister.
Paul, Michael Roepke was born on Feb. 10, 1944 at Independence, the son of Rudolph and Edna Grace Ellen (Weitnauer) Roepke. He received his education from the Hazleton School. Paul joined the U.S. Navy where he served from Feb. 9, 1962 to Jan. 7, 1965. Paul was united in marriage to Susan Kay Torrey on Nov. 12, 1965 at Zion Lutheran Church at Oelwein. Paul worked construction for 18 years. The majority of those years were with Woods Construction. He worked for the city of Hazleton for many years and was currently employed by Buchanan County Secondary Roads. Paul was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He had formerly been a member of the Hazleton City Council and the Hazleton Volunteer Fire Department. Paul was a member of the National Modena Pigeon Association and recently won the category of Grand Champion Modena.
