Azotus 'Zote' Crain
ROWLEY - Funeral services for Azotus E. 'Zote' Crain will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, at the Rowley Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Mike Townsley officiating. Burial will be in the Rowley Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Reiff Funeral Home Independence, where there will be a 7 p.m. Masonic service. Friends may also call from 9 a.m. until service time at the church Wednesday.
Mr. Crain, 89, died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 23,1997, at the West Village Care Center, Independence, after a short illness. He was born July 11, 1908, near Rowley, the son of Edgar and Mary Ann (Grover) Crain. He graduated from Rowley Consolidated high School in 1926 and attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon for a year, then received a business certificate from AIB in Des Moines. Here returned to Rowley where he operated the DX Tank Wagon Service and drove school bus. On July 3, 1931, he married Elizabeth Gunzenhauser in Rowley. The couple lived in Rowley until 1953 when they moved to a nearby farm. They returned to Rowley in 1990 after retirement. Mr. Crain was a member and elder of the Rowley Presbyterian Church, a past master of the Holman Masonic Lodge 593 of Rowley, and past director of the Buchanan County REC.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; two sons, Charles (Roberta) of Oxford, Ohio and Richard (JoAnn) of Rowley; three grandchildren; four great -grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucille Hand of Independence and Fern Solberg of Sun City, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Ryan Crain in 1989; two brothers, Lyle and Walter; and a sister, Lera Robison.
