Hi,

I am not aware of anything approaching a comprehensive business directory including small shopkeepers for the 1870's in Bremer or most rural Iowa counties.

For a solution to your question I would look for an Obit in Harlan, NE where he lived well into his 60's. For a free lookup of the D.o.D. try http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~neharlan/cemeteries.html. Once you get the date ask a researcher for obit from Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln. Many Bremer folk went down to the counties in the Republican Valley such as Harlan, Franklin and Webster at least till drought or financial panics sent them home or onto California or Colorado.
