Darol D. Hagedorn, 78 of Cedar Falls, died Monday, March 24, 2014 at St. Mary's hospital in Rochester, Olmsted County, Minnesota.

He was born at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 28th 1935 delivered by Dr. Herman F. Borchert in Frederika, Bremer County, Iowa the second of four sons born to Louis Rudolph and Olinda Elizabeth Bremer Hagedorn.

He was raised in the Lutheran faith and attended school in a small country school house not far from their farm in Bremer County.

In 1953 he enlisted in the United States Air Force, completing his basic training at Lackland, AFB in San Antonio, TX. While stationed at Travis AFB in Fairfield, California he met and married Frances Reynolds on May 16, 1959 in Carson City, Nevada. He was stationed at Beal AFB in Marysville, California and transferred to Lockbourne AFB in Columbus, OH. It was at Lockbourne where he was awarded Outstanding Crew Chief of the Year for the 301st Air Refueling Wing in 1966. During 1965 his aircraft flew 65 sorties with 65 on time take offs. During the "Two Duck 14" mission he performed launch, recovery, and regeneration duties with only one minor maintenance write up during the entire mission. In September 1968 he was transferred to Carswell AFB in Fort Worth, Texas. It was during his time stationed at Carswell he met the woman who would be his wife for more than 38 years Sharon Vaughan Godfrey.

After retiring in 1974 at the age of 38 he returned to his roots in Iowa to be closer to his family. After moving to Cedar Falls, Iowa he and Sharon were married on May 23, 1975 in Clinton, Oklahoma.

He worked in construction for William F. McIntee and Sons in Waterloo and also for Magee Construction before retiring in 1997. He wasn't the type of person to sit around. Not quite ready to slow down and enjoy his golden years he pursued something he had always wanted to do and that was drive trucks. He signed up for a class through Hawkeye Tech and obtained his CDL. He drove for Ryder Transportation until finally deciding it was okay to slow down and retired for good.

Although he did not follow in his father's footsteps and farm as an occupation he never lost the love of planting something, watching it grow, and sharing his harvest with family and friends.

His love for animals was always apparent whether they were his own faithful companions or strays who needed a warm place to sleep and food on a cold winter's night. On one occasion he left the garage door open enough for a mother cat to bring in her kittens to escape the cold.

He loved sports. Football, baseball, basketball, and NASCAR. He was most passionate about baseball and football. His father was a huge Yankee fan so it was no surprise he also had a place in his heart for the Yankees. He coached flag football, held yard markers for football games, and kept official score for baseball games. His biggest passion was fishing.
