Alberta Caroline (Paullus) Rowray, 98, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 24, 2010, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly of natural causes.

Alberta was born on Nov. 19, 1911, on a farm near Hampton, Iowa, the daughter of George and Bertha (Fahrmann) Paullus. She was baptized on Feb. 25, 1912, in Latimer, Iowa. In 1929, Alberta graduated from Hampton High School, and following her schooling, she stayed home to take care of her ailing mother and found jobs at the Soil Conservation Service, Farm Bureau and Harrison’s Dime Store.

On April 11, 1940, Alberta was united in marriage to Lester G. Meyer in Hampton, Iowa. Alberta then worked at the Hampton State Bank until the couple moved to Waverly in 1943, where Alberta worked for the Schlutsmeyer Dry Good Store. Lester died on Sept. 25, 1947, and in 1949, Alberta became employed by the State Bank of Waverly as assistant cashier, bookkeeper and helped open new accounts, retiring in 1969. On May 19, 1967, she was united in marriage to David H. Rowray in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. The couple lived in Waverly until moving to Titusville, Fla., in 1975. David died on Nov. 7, 1993, and two years later Alberta moved back to Waverly, making her home at the Eichhorn Haus. Changing healthcare needs took her to Linden Place assisted living and finally to her room at Woodland Terrace nursing center.

Alberta was very faithful and active in her church in Titusville and Waverly. She played piano for the “God’s Choristers” singing group for kids at her church in Titusville and was a former member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Trinity United Methodist Church both in Waverly. Alberta also helped organize a youth center in Waverly, where she would chaperone two or three nights a week, and also helped organize the youth choir at Trinity United Methodist Church. She just loved visiting with people, especially the young folks. Alberta would enjoy handwork, making Afghans, knitting, writing letters, listening to music and was an avid sports fan.

Alberta is survived by her children and their spouses, LaVonne (Bill) Blair of Iowa City, Iowa, Richard (Carol) Rowray of Coralville, Iowa, and David (Kay) Rowray of Newton, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Dr. William Blair, Rebecca Hansen, Scott Blair, Julie Pearson, Rick Rowray, Sarah Mezzo, Jennifer Lasagna and Alyson Morrison; 15 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Janice (Lou) Kemp, Joyce Avery, James (Frances) Paullus, John (Mary) Paullus and Roland Stahlhut; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and her special friend, Joyce Garner of Waverly. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one brother, DeWitt Frederick Paullus, and a sister-in-law, Eva Paullus.
