WAVERLY - Augie Antone Stafford, 86, of Waverly, died at his home Wednesday, April 27.

He was born Aug. 12, 1924, in Waverly, son of Irve and Mary Hundley Stafford. On Jan. 21, 1946, he married Nellie M. Reiners in Waverly. She preceded him in death.

Mr. Stafford served in the US Army during World War II with the Company E 313th Infantry. He was employed by the railroad from 1946 until 1967 and then at Terex from 1967 until his retirement in 1987.

Survived by: a son, Gary "Reggie" (Mary) of Waverly; two grandsons, Steve Stafford and Christian (Meganne) Stafford; a great-granddaughter, Ava Elinore Stafford; and a brother, Everett (Gerri) of Waverly.

Preceded in death by: an infant son, Steven Eugene; and a sister and brother-in-law, Hattie and Wes Matthias.

Memorial services; 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church, preceded by an hour of visitation, with inurnment in Harlington Cemetery, both in Waverly. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 176 of Waverly. His body has been cremated per his request. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, is in charge of arrangements.

Augie was awarded a Purple Heart with cluster on July 6, 1944, for his wounds received as a result of enemy action in France.

He loved to play golf and enjoyed his collection of putters.
