Keith O. Koeberle, longtime Sumner businessman, dies
Keith O. Koeberle, 68, lifetime resident of Sumner and prominent longtime Sumner hardware man, died suddenly Sunday afternoon, Feb. 20, following a coronary thrombosis.
Death came at 3:30 p.m. at the Koeberle home on Sixth St.
Mr. Koeberle had only recently sold the Koeberle Hardware Store to Gordon Trout and had retired from the Sumner business scene just a month ago. He had been active in the hardware business in Sumner for more than 50 years.
Mr. Koeberle had also been active in civic affairs, having served on the Sumner City Council for two terms, 1941-1945, on the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department for 33 years and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Sumner Commercial Club. He was a member of the Thomas E. Woods Post No. 223, American Legion of Sumner for 45 consecutive years and was Past Master of the Lookout Lodge No. 395, A.F. & A.M. of Sumner.
A veteran of World War I, he served in Italy and France with the Army Air Corps as an airplane mechanic.
Keith O. Koeberle was born June 5, 1898 in Sumner, Iowa, the son of John G. and Ellen Forsman Koeberle.
He graduated from Sumner high school with the class of 1916, and attended Iowa State University, Ames for two years.
He married Lela Reisner on Sept. 27, 1923 at the Little Brown Church at Nashua.
Mr. Koeberle has been a member of St. John American Lutheran Church since April 5, 1925. He has served on the Church council and on various other boards and committees in the church during his years of membership.
He is survived by his wife, Lela; a son, Lowell of La Honda, Calif.; a daughter, Annette (Mrs. Clair Adkins) of Bend, Oregon; and four grandchildren.
His parents, and one brother, Harold, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. John American Lutheran Church, with the pastor, Rev. John Mohr, officiating. Family prayer service was held at the Parish House at 1:45 p.m. Interment was in Wilson Grove Cemetery north of Sumner, with military rites by Thomas E. Woods Post No. 223, American Legion of Sumner. Milnes Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
