WAVERLY — Willard "Bill" Meyer, 95, of Waverly, formerly of San Diego, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.

He was born Nov. 3, 1914, in rural Waverly, son of Fred and Mary Oltrogge Meyer. He married Winifred Miller on Feb. 14, 1939, in Las Vegas. She died in September 2001.

He graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1933. He worked for Meyer Pharmacy as a soda jerk and at Wells Grocery, both in Waverly. He helped build Inglewood Race Track in California and attended electrician school. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-46. Mr. Meyer served under Gen. George Patton in the European theater with the Armored Division and received three Purple Hearts. He was employed by the city of San Diego as an electrician.

Survived by: a brother, Harley of Waverly; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Meyer of Waverly.

Preceded in death by: two sisters, Luella Boevers and Louise Liebau; and two brothers, Carl and Alfred.

Memorial services: 3:30 p.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Chapel at Bartels. There will be no visitation; his body has been cremated. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home of Waverly is assisting the family.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Waverly, or the Bartels Chaplaincy Fund.
