Elgin Echo, Thursday, 3 August 1899.

The Oelwein Journal relates that John Kruse, a German farmer living two and three-fourths miles east of Frederika, committed suicide Monday, July 24, at about 7:00 o'clock. No reason has been given as the cause for the rash act, as he was always considered of sound mind and without family relations that would in any way seem to cause despondency. He arose as usual that morning. After doing the chores he returned to the house and washed himself. Without saying anything he immediately went back to the barn, sat down in one corner and with a double-barreled shot gun blew off the top of his head. He was about forty years of age and leaves a wife and one child.
