GUS SCHWAKE DIES THURSDAY MORNING OF HEART ATTACK
End Comes Without Warning to Lifelong Resident of This Community

The community was shocked last Thursday morning when it, became generally known that Gus Schwake, 61, had died suddenly at 4 o'clock that morning from a heart attack. Although he had a siege of illness last summer, he had not been indisposed in any way during the hours prior to his death. The attack siezed him suddenly Thursday morning and he died before his wife could render him assistance.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran church with T. C. Klatt officiating. Interment was in Spring Fountain cemetery.

Mr. Schwake had been a resident of this part of Bremer county all his life. He was born in Leroy township Feb. 21, 1876, the son of William Schwake and Engel Tietje, receiving the rite of baptism soon after birth. He attended the parochial school at Spring Fountain and was confirmed in the Christian faith by Rev. Haendschke Mar. 30, 1890.

He was united in marriage to Minnie Wente Mar. 23, 1899, which union was blessed with six children, three sons and three daughters.

After his marriage Mr. Schwake lived on a farm 3 miles south of Sumner for a period of 11 years. Then he moved to Leroy township to take up his residence on a large farm near Spring Fountain. Here he lived for 17 years, after which in 1928, he moved to Sumner to live in retirement until his death.

He was an esteemed member of St. John's Lutheran church at Spring Fountain and after moving to Sumner he transferred his membership to St. Paul's Lutheran church here. He served in several offices in both congregations. He was a hard working man, thrifty and circumspect in every way, and thus was accorded the respect of everybody with whom he came in contact. He was a loving and provident father.

He leaves to mourn his wife; three sons, Richard, Erwin and Lorenz Schwake, all of Sumner; three daughters, Mrs. Robert Pries of Ackley, Mrs. Henry Becker of Independence, and Mrs. Theron Carroll of Frederika; one brother, Frank Schwake, now spending the winter in Florida; two sisters, Mrs. Louis Matthias of Readlyn and Mrs. Wm. Weiskirch of Sumner; 10 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
