Karen A. Aschbrenner, 62, of Waverly, Iowa, died Monday morning, May 12, 2003, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital of natural causes.

Karen was born on July 12, 1940, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of John Harmon and Louise Mae (Ludeman) Cooley. Karen was baptized on July 5, 1945 at the Methodist Church in Waverly and was confirmed on April 15, 1962 at St. John Lutheran in Waverly. Karen attended the Waverly School System, graduating from the Waverly High School in 1960. On September 9, 1962, she was united in marriage to Melvin J. Aschbrenner at St. John Lutheran Church in Waverly. The couple made their home in Waverly and Karen worked for the Waverly Convalescent Home, Oberheu's Restaurant, and cleaned for private homes in Waverly. Karen retired in 1988 due to health problems. Karen became a resident of the Tripoli Nursing Home on November 28, 2002.

Karen was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Waverly. She enjoyed to collect Elvis memorabilia and cook books, and loved to go camping with her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

Karen is survived by her two sons; Matthew Aschbrenner of Waverly, Iowa, and his fiancé, Terri Medearis of Waterloo, Iowa, David Aschbrenner and his wife, Cathy of Denver, Iowa; 3 grandchildren, Katie Jo, Kimberly Ann, Daniel J. Aschbrenner all of Denver, Iowa; and one sister, Correne Bowen and her husband, Harold of Waverly, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Melvin on July 17, 1997; two brothers, Leo F. and Harley M. Cooley; and a nephew, James (Ugg) Cooley.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waverly, Iowa, with Pastor Larry Sipe officiating. Burial will be in the Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly. 352-1187.
