Mildred M. Turnball Hesse, 83, of Waverly, Iowa, died Monday, December 2, 2002, at the Waverly Municipal Hospital of natural causes.

She was born on March 1, 1919, near Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Baker) Fuerstenberg. She attended country school near her home, and graduated from the Waverly High School in 1936. Mildred worked for the Uptown Cafe in Waverly for a time before moving to Minneapolis where she became a waitress at the Radisson Downtown Hotel.

On February 5, 1944, she was united in marriage to Robert M. Turnball in Minneapolis. The couple then lived in Ionia, Iowa, where they started their family. In 1952, they moved to Savanna, Illinois, and Bob worked for a munitions plant during the Korean War. In 1954 they moved to Waverly, and when the children were all in school, Mildred worked at Fareway Grocery Store and the Waverly Bowl Inn. In 1967, she became the office assistant for veterinarians Dr. Arch Murphy and Dr. Harlan Platte. Bob died in 1976 and Mildred continued with her position at the Vet Clinic.

On November 24, 1984, she married Calvin Hesse at Immanuel Lutheran Church-Klinger, rural Readlyn. The couple made their home on Cal's farm near Readlyn, and in 1987, Mildred retired from the clinic. In 1989, they sold the farm and moved to Waverly to live in Mildred's home. Mildred and Cal enjoyed traveling, making trips to Germany and Hawaii. They also drove Winnebago Motor Homes all around the country, making delivery of the vehicles to new owners. On March 28, 1997, Cal died, and Mildred continued to live in their home.

She was a longtime, faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly, where she was active with the Corinth-Martin-Nazareth Circle, worked Do-Day, and served frequently as a greeter on Sundays. Mildred was a member of a very special group, the Monday Night Coffee Girls, a group that has gotten together every week for the last twenty years, each member taking turns to host. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Waverly. Mildred loved to bowl, crochet, play cards, garden, and give her time and talents to her church. Her greatest passion, though, came from spending time with her family, attending their activities, fishing, and just plain getting together.

Mildred is survived by three daughters, Dianne Turnball of Woodstock, IL, Deb Turnball of Janesville, IA, Donna Turnball of Waverly, IA; her son and daughter-in-law, Dave & Kathy Turnball of Indianola, IA; five grandchildren, Richard Kalnitz, Robert & Kara Kalnitz, Dara Turnball, Sarah Turnball and Megan Turnball; by her son-in-law, Arnold Kalnitz of Chicago, IL; and two sisters-in-law, Shirley Fuerstenberg of Waverly, IA and Eileen Fuerstenberg of Clarksville, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Bob and Cal; one son in infancy, Dennis; one daughter, Denise; and two brothers, Wendell and Romane.
