Daniel Hurlbut was born Dec. 13, 1820, in Harmony, Chautauqua County, N.Y., and died at his home in Waverly, Iowa, April 4, 1911. He was married March 18, 1862 to Almena G. [Gilchrist] Cone of Panama, Chautauqua County, N.Y.

They lived at Clymer, N.Y., until 1862, when they came to Bremer County, Iowa, and settled on a farm, where they resided until 1901, when they moved to Waverly. To this union thirteen children were born: Mrs. Adaline M. [Adaline Melissa] Miller of Waverly, Ia.; Mrs. George [Emogene Nancy] Calvert of Raymond, S.D.; W. D. [Warren David] Hurlbut of Calmar, Iowa; D.C. [Delancy Clarence] Hurlbut of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Henry [Julia F.] Gish of Waverly, Iowa; Mrs. George [Florence E.] McLarnan, Clinton, Iowa; C.D. [Clarence D.] Hurlbut, Wilmont, Minn.; Mrs. J.W. [Jennie Almena] Young, Six Mile Grove; Mrs. R.T. [Jessie Eliza] Alcock, Waverly, Iowa. These, with the wife [Almena Gilchrist Cone Hurlbut] and forty-four grandchildren and seven great grand children, are left to mourn his death. The daughter, Mrs. Sarah A. Hodges, and three sons, Sylvester, Grant, and Murray, having gone before. Funeral services were from the house at two O’clock Thursday afternoon, Rev. A.R. Rice officiating.
