Among the most important and profitable business enterprises in Sumner is that operated under the name of the Sumner Nursery. it was established by William H. Creager and George A. Wheaton in the year 1892 and was conducted by them for two years, Mr. Wheaton then giving up his interest. William H. Creager and sons conducted it up to 1902 when Willliam H. Creager took in partnership his son W.O.Creager. It was run under this management until the death of the father on March 8, 1913. In that year W.O.Creager took charge of the business and he still continues in its management. They grow and propagate a full line of hardy varieties of fruit, fruit trees, ornamental tress and shrubs, roses, bulbs, etc., also evergreens. All of the stock they sell is grown in their own nursery and in additon to the above varieties they also grow pure seed potatoes and seed oats. In 1900 they were awarded a good medal at the exposition at Paris, France, and in 1910, twenty-five dollars in gold and first prize in the Iowa Corn Growers Association, Des Moines, Iowa. They have in the years past built up this business from a few rows of stock grown in the garden to over twenty acres of stock located on the Creager farm in section 2, Sumner township. They do a wholesale and retail business. There are few farms and city residences in this vicinity whose owners are not patrons of the Sumner Nursery and the result has been added beauty and attractiveness as well as material benefit. Besides the above W.O. Crager makes a specialty of poultry-raising, his favorites being White Wyandottes, which have won for him many first premiums, trophy cups and prizes at shows, fairs and exhibitions. W.O. Creager is a life member of the Iowa Horticulture Society, the American Poultry Association and the White Wyandotte Club.
