Schumacker, John J.

John J. Schumacker, a well known farmer and stock-raiser of Maxfield township, was born in Germany, March 29, 1864. He is a son of Joachim and Mary (Rust) Schumacker, also natives of Germany, the former of whom died in Maxfield township, June 5, 1913. His wife survives and makes her home with the subject of this review. In their family were two children: Mrs. John Ruhs of Maxfield township and John J. of this review.

John J. Schumacker came to America with his parents in 1873, and on the 22d of November of that year settled with them in Maxfield township, this county, where he has since resided. His entire active life has been devoted to agricultural pursuits, and in his chosen line of work he has gained that success which always rewwards industry and perseverance. To the ninety-two acres which his father purchased for sixteen hundred dollars, he has added from time to time and he owns today two hundred and forty acres of choice land. Upon this property he has erected two sets of improvements and had provided it also with a modern and well furnished home. In addtion to general farming he engages in stock-raising, and his interests being well managed have become in the course of time extensive and important.

In March, 1889, Mr. Schumacker was united in marriage to Miss sophia Richman, a native of Maxfield township and a daughter of John and Dorothy (Collins) Richman, natives of Germany and early settlers in this part of Iowa. The parents now reside in Waverly. In the Richman family were seven children: John, a resident of Maxfield township; Mrs. Schumacker, the wife of the subject of this review; Henry, a resident of Oriska, North Dakota; Frederick of New Hampton, Iowa; Mrs. Carrie Myerhoff, who was born July 11, 1876, and who now resides in Maxfield township; Mrs. Minnie Soldwisch, residing near Waverly; and William, a resident of North Dakota. Mr. and Mrs. Schumacker have four children: Henry J. of Maxfield township; Mrs. Clara Schwier of Franklin township; John H. and Arthur, at home.

Mr. Schumacker is a member of the German Evangelical Lutheran church of Klinger, and he gives his political allegiance to the democratic party. He has served as constable, justice of the peace and for three terms township clerk, proving a capable, conscientious and able official. He has made his home in Maxfield township since his childhood and is well known, his upright and honorable lfe having gained him the confidence and esteem of the entire community.
