Herman H. Meyer, one of the active and progressive business men of Readlyn, well known in business circles as a successful dealer in cement, was born in Maxfield township, this county, November 16, 1870, a son of H.O. and Sophia (Moeller) Meyer, natives of Germany, the former born January 23, 1840, and the latter March 8, 1843. The were pioneers in Bremer county and an extended mention of their career is found elsewhere in this work.
Herman H. Meyer was reared upon his father's farm and acquired his education in the public schools of Maxfield township. When he began his independent career he turned his attention to farming, becoming the owner of one hundred and sixty acres of choice land on section 36. He provided this with excellent barns and outbuildings and made various other improvements, the farm becoming one of the finest and most valuable in this locality. Mr. Meyer continued to reside upon his property until 1908 and then moved into Readlyn, establishing himself in the general cement business, with which he is still identified. He has met with excellent success in the conduct of this enterprise and has a large patronage, accorded to him in recognition of his honorable business methods and his reasonable prices. When he moved from the farm he purchased thirty-four and one quarter acres of land adjoining Readlyn and here he has erected a comfortable modern home, one of the finest of its kind in this locality. He also owns the homestead of one hundred and sixty acres on section 36, Maxfield township.
On the 1st of October, 1893, Mr. Meyer was united in marriage to Miss Louisa Spier, who was born in Maxfield township July 13, 1872. She is a daughter of Carl and Wilhelmina (Tilking) Spier, natives of Germany and pioneer settlers in Maxfield township. In their family were the following children: William, who has passed away; Mrs. Wilhelmina Meyerhoff, of Chickasaw county; Carl, deceased; John, residing in Maxfield township; Mrs. Meyer, wife of the subject of this review; Tilli, who has passed away; Ernest, a resident of Readlyn; Herman, who makes his home in Blackhawk county; and Sophia, deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Meyer have become the parents of four children: Martha, who was born June 1, 1896; Louis, born December 22, 1901; Edwin, July 29, 1906; Esther, February 16, 1908. The family are members of St. Paul's Lutheran church of Readlyn.
Mr. Meyer is a democrat in his political views and has held various positions of trust and responsibility, serving as township trustee and road supervisor, as constable for four years and as president of the school board of Maxfield township. He is now trustee of the township, an office which he has held for the past three years. He is one of the progressive and able men of Readlyn who has gained for himself an honorable position in business and political circles - a citizen whom Bremer county is proud to number among her native sons.
