Through many years of close and prominent connection with agricultural interests of Bremer county and in all the relations of life Charles Alcock commanded the respect and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all with whom he came in contact and therefore his death was deeply and sincerely mourned by his neighbors and friends. He was the founder of the Alcock family in Bremer county, remaining a continuous resident of this part of Iowa from 1869 until he passed away.

Mr. Alcock was born in Yorkshire, England, October 27, 1819, and spent his childhood and early youth in his native country. At the age of twenty-five he came to the United States and settled in Grant county, Wisconsin, whence in 1869 he moved to Bremer county, Iowa. He settled on a farm on sections 14 and 23, Douglas township and for many years thereafter was connected with agricultural interests of that locality, adding to his original farm until he finally owned two hundred and forty acres of valuable land. With characteristic energy he carried forward the work of improving and developing this property, making it productive and valuable to a high degree and taking his place in the front ranks of progressive agriculturists.

On the 20th of March, 1845, Mr. Alcock was united in marriage in Yorkshire, England, to Miss Elizabeth Peacock, who passed away November 3, 1870. Her daughter, Hannah, died November 21, 1870, and they were the first to be buried in what has since been known as the Alcock cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Alcock became the parents of ten children: William, who was born September 11, 1846, and who died April 1, 1848; John W., who was born January 29, 1849, and who died May 14, 1909; Hannah, who was born July 20, 1851, and who died November 21, 1870; Ambrose, who was born June 1, 1854, and who resides at New Hampton; George, who was born October 24, 1856, and who now makes his home at Forest Lake, Minnesota; Charles, who was born June 25, 1859, and who resides in Douglas township; Elizabeth A., who was born September 9, 1861, and who married Martin Clary, of Douglas township; Thomas, born July 24, 1865; residing in Douglas township; Joseph, whose birth occurred October 30, 1867, and who resides in Frederika and Ruth Ellen, twin to Joseph and the wife of Wells Ferris, of Osceola, Missouri.

Charles Alcock was one of the pioneers in this part of Iowa and long bore an active and honorable part in the work of development and upbuilding. At his death he left a record that is well worthy of emulation and a name that is still held in high honor and esteem in Bremer county.
