Fred H. Meyer, a representative of one of the prominent families of Maxfield township and well known in the implement business in Readlyn, is a native son of this part of Iowa, born November 8, 1873. The father came to Bremer county in 1866 and was one of the earliest settlers in this part of the state. He can still remember the hardships endured by the pioneers at a time when there was practically no money in the community and when labor was extremely scarce. The trading points were a great distance apart and all the necessities of life were secured by barter. Mr. and Mrs. Meyer raised their family amid these pioneer conditions and worked together for the accomplishment of success, attaining finally a modest fortune. The father has now retired from active life and they make their home in a comfortable residence in Readlyn. In their family were five children: Herman H., who was born November 16, 1871, and now resides in Readlyn; Fred H., of this review; Louis H., manager of an elevator at Readlyn; Mrs. Wilhelmina Kehe, who was born November 5, 1879, and who makes her home in Readlyn; and Anna, who was born April 24, 1884, and who resides at home.

Fred H. Meyer was reared in Maxfield township and acquired his education in the district schools. At the beginning of his active career he followed farming and stock-raising, engaging in these occupations until he moved to Readlyn, where he has since been connected with the implement business. He owns a comfortable home in the town and a well improved and valuable farm in Maxfield township. All of his business interests are intelligently and capably managed and have brought him a gratifying measure of success. Mr. Meyer has three children, a son and two daughters. He is a man of exemplary character, widely known in his native township and honored and respected wherever he is known.
