J.D. Hochberger, a prosperous and progressive farmer of Sumner township, was born in Bremer county, November 20, 1875, a son of Charles Hochberger, a native of Germany. The father came to America when he was three years of age and after living in Hancock county, New York, for three years, was brought by his parents to Dubuque county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. In 1871 he came to Bremer county and bought one hundred and twenty acres of land which he developed and improved until 1907, when he retired from active life and moved to Hawkeye, where he still resides. His wife was in her maidenhood Miss Eliza Pleggenkuhle, a native of Germany, and they became the parents of five children.

J.D. Hochberger remained at home until he was twenty years of age, acquiring his education in the public schools of Bremer county. His entire active life has been spent as a farmer and long experience in this field of labor has brought him gratifying and well deserved success. He purchased his present farm in 1895 and since that time has steadily carried forward the work of improvement and cultivation, replacing the old buildings by modern and substantial ones and neglecting nothing which would add to the appearance or value of his place. In addition to general farming he operates a threshing outfit and has made this a profitable source of income.

Mr. Hochberger married Miss Anna Wittenberg, who was born in Fayette county, this state, and they have become the parents of five children, Louis, Henry, Ida, Dave and Pearl, all at home. Mr. Hochberger is a member of the Lutheran church and gives his political allegiance to the democratic party. He has been a member of the school board for seventeen years, during the past ten of which he has served as president, and he is now in his third term as assessor of Sumner township. He is a progressive and public-spirited official and a farsighted and discriminating business man and he holds the esteem and confidence of all who are associated with him.
