H.A. Buhr is engaged in general farming and stock-raising upon one hundred and twenty acres of land on section 28, Fremont township, this tract constituting a portion of the farm upon which he was born January 27, 1875. He is a son of August Buhr, a native of Germany, who, following the death of his father, came to the United States with his mother, settling in Cook county, Illinois, where he worked upon a farm. Later he moved to Bremer county, Iowa, and after spending some time as a monthly laborer purchased one hundred acres of land on section 28, Fremont township, to which he afterward added. This was improved with a small frame house and a stable and upon the property Mr. Buhr resided for many years. Later he built a large frame house on another part of the farm and there lived retired until his death, which occurred in 1910, when he was fifty-nine years of age. His wife, who was in her maidenhood Miss Sophia Wilkening, was born in Bremer county, a daughter of Henry Wilkening, one of the earliest settlers here. The mother of the subject of this review survives her husband and makes her home in Tripoli. She is a devout member of the Evangelical Lutheran church. Mr. and Mrs. August Buhr had three children: August, who died at the age of two; H.A., of this review; and Sophia, who has passed away.

H.A. Buhr was reared at home and acquired his education in the district and German schools and in Tripoli high school, which he attended for one year. Upon his father's death he succeeded to one hundred and twenty acres of the homestead, his mother retaining forty acres and he has since carried forward the work of developing this place. He has a fine set of farm buildings and he keeps them always in good repair, never neglecting anything which would add to the attractiveness or value of the place.

Mr. Buhr married Miss Emma Schultz, who was born on a farm in Fremont township, a daughter of Fred Schultz, who is living in retirement in Tripoli. Mr. and Mrs. Buhr became the parents of four children, Amelia, Adella, Elfreda and August. Mr. Buhr is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church and a democrat in his political views. He is interested in the development of his native township and does all in his power to promote it, cooperating heartily in all progressive public projects. He gives a great deal of time, however, to the management of his farming interests and in these has met with gratifying and well deserved success.
