Emil C. Stumme, a young man of unusual ability and capacity, prominently connected with financial interests of Bremer county as cashier of the Readlyn Savings Bank, was born in Maxfield township, October 27, 1888. He is a son of H.C. and Wilhelmina (Matthias) Stumme, the former born in Cook county, Illinois, and the latter in Maxfield township, this county. The Matthias family were among the first settlers in Maxfield township and its members are widely and favorably known. Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Stumme became the parents of nine children: John W., residing in Denver, Iowa; Henry H., who makes his home in Franklin township; Mrs. Anna Kelling, residing in Minnesota; Mrs. Minnie Lobeck, of Maxfield township, Emil C., of this review; Arthur, operating the home farm in Maxfield township; Mrs. Bertha Platt, of Maxfield township, Herman, attending Wartburg College at Waverly; and Arnold, a student in the district schools.

Emil C. Stumme grew to manhood in Maxfield township, acquiring his education in the common schools and in Wartburg College in Waverly, where he took a business course, graduating in 1904. He afterward clerked in a store in Denver and in the following year reentered Wartburg college, where he took an academic course, later engaging in teaching in the Moberly Business College at Moberly, Missouri. When he left this institution he returned to the farm and there remained until September 1, 1908, when he became connected with the Readlyn Savings Bank as bookkeeper, holding this position until January 15, 1911, when he was made cashier of the institution. He has proven very efficient in the discharge of his responsible duties and holds the confidence and regard of his superiors and associates. He owns stock in the bank and in addition to this represents a number of fire insurance companies in this part of the state.

On the 6th of June, 1911, Mr. Stumme was united in marriage to Miss Anna C. Paul, a native of Mount Vernon township, Blackhawk county, born March 23, 1891. She is a daughter of George H. and Sarah (Notger) Paul, also natives of Blackhawk county and now residing upon a farm in Mount Vernon township. In their family were three children: Mrs. Dora Anderson, of Mount Vernon township; Mrs. Stumme, wife of the subject of this review; and Flora, at home. Mr. and Mrs. Stumme have become the parents of two sons: Harold, born May 12, 1912; and Burton, born August 3, 1913.

Mr. Stumme is a member of St. Paul's Evangelical church of Readlyn and gives his political allegiance to the democratic party. He is one of Maxfield township's most progressive and successful native sons and although he is still a young man his influence is felt as a powerful factor in financial circles.
