D.D. Hatch, who since 1885 has lived upon his present farm of eighty acres on section 36, Sumner township, is a native of this locality, born on his father's farm February 25, 1860. He is a son of D.R. Hatch, of whom further mention is made elsewhere in this volume.

D.D. Hatch acquired his education in the district schools of his native township and remained at home until he was twenty-three years of age, assisting his father with the work of the farm. In 1885 he purchased eighty acres of wild prairie land and has operated the property since that time, transforming it in the interval into a modern and productive farm. Upon it he had made substantial improvements, erecting the necessary buildings and installing labor-saving machinery and he has neglected nothing which will add to its appearance or value. General farming and dairying engage his attention and he has made both branches of his activities important and profitable.

In Bremer county Mr. Hatch married Miss Clara Bucknam, a native of Wisconsin and a daughter of J.O. Bucknam, who died in Tripoli, this state. Mr. and Mrs. Hatch became the parents of three children: Frank, who is married and resides in Dayton township; and Ella and Anna, who live at home. The wife and daughters are members of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Hatch gives his political allegiance to the republican party and has served as justice of the peace and secretary of the school board. He is one of the active and progressive farmer of Sumner township and enjoys, in an unuaual degree, the confidence and good will of the community.
