A.L. Nicklaus, for the past thirty years prominently connected with farming and stock-raising interests of Bremer county, was born in DuPage county, Illinois, August 14, 1859. He is a son of Nicholas Nicklaus, a native of Switzerland, who served in the regular army of that country before coming to America. He was a recruiting officer in the Union army during the Civil war and afterward a member of the police force in Chicago.

A.L. Nicklaus' mother died when he was still a child and he afterward made his home with his brother for a few years. At the early age of eleven he began earning his own livelihood and his education advantages were therefore limited. He has supplied this deficiency by constant reading and study since he reached maturity and is today a well informed and broadly cultured man. He has been connected with agricultural interests of Bremer county for the past thirty years and ten years ago he purchased his present farm, which comprises fifty acres lying on section 35, Sumner township. Upon this property he has made excellent improvements, steadily carrying forward the work of its cultivation and development.

Mr. Nicklaus married Miss Mary Maurer, a native of Ohio, who came to Bremer county with her parents when she was still a child. Mr. and Mrs. Nicklaus have three children, Elizabeth, Andrew and Helen. Mr. Nicklaus is a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and he gives his political allegiance to the republican party, serving at present as a member of the school board. He stand high in business and social circles and has a wide acquaintance in the county.
