Irving E. Smith, a well known and esteemed young resident of Waverly, has served as clerk of the district court since January, 1907, and in that capacity has made a highly commendable and creditable record. His birth occurred in Polk township, Bremer county, on the 3d of October, 1881, his parents being Gilbert W. and Elizabeth (Swinton) Smith, the former born in Dubuque county, Iowa in July, 1847, and the latter in Grant county, Wisconsin, on the 6th of October, 1852. Gilbert W. Smith came to this county with his parents about 1854 and here grew to manhood. He was engaged in agricultural pursuits for a number of years but subsequently turned his attention to general merchandising at Horton, Bremer county, and continued in that business throughout the remainer of an extensive and favorable acquaintance throughout the community where he has made his home for almost six decades. His wife also survives. Mr. Smith held the office of postmaster at Horton for a term of four years, faithfully discharging the duties devolving upon him in that connection.

Irving E. Smith, the third in order of birth in a family of six children, attended school at Horton in the acquirement of an education and also pursued a course of study in a commercial college at Burlington, Iowa. At the age of seventeen years he took up the profession of teaching, acting as an instructor in the district schools in the northwestern part of Bremer county and also in the graded school at Horton. He taught for a period of about five years and during that time attended the school at Burlington for one year. In 1906 he was elected clerk of the district court and in January, 1907, took up the duties of this office, which he has since ably and conscientiously discharged. He is interested in some valuable farm lands in Bremer county and enjoys an enviable reputation as a prosperous and enterprising young citizen.

In his political views Mr. Smith is a staunch democrat, having supported the men and measures of that party since age conferred on him the right of franchise. Fraternally he is identified with the Knights of Pythias at Waverly. In this county, where his entire life has been spent, the circle of his friends is almost coextensive with the circle of his acquaintances.
