Here is a bio from the History of Boxholm and Grant Township in Boone County, Iowa, 1986, by David C. Peterson, p. 212:
Gust Brod (1859-1938)
August Brod was born in Sundhousen, Alsace-Lorraine, France on Aug. 17, 1859. (Note: The Alsace-Lorraine provinces of France were seized by Germany in 1871 during the Franco-Prussian War and not returned until the Treaty of Versailles in 1919; hence some confusion about country of origin. The Brod family was of solid German background, as this was always the native tongue in these two provinces.) He was one of give children born to August Brod, Sr. (1814-1893) and his wife Mary Salome and immigrated to this country with their family in 1872, making their way to Grant Township that same year. The father bought 60 acres of land in Section 26 and was engaged in farming it for the rest of his life. Both are buried in Union Cemetery southwest of Boxholm.
August Brod arrived here in Grant Township at the age of 12 years and helped his father break the virgin prairie for the planting of crops. On July 12, 1881 Mr. Brod purchased 80 acres of his own in Section 27 (S1/2 of NE1/4) and this became his homestead. On Jan. 7, 1902 he bought his father's 60 acres in Section 26, thus farming 140 acres.
On Christmas Day of 1884 he was married to Miss Cora Dell Muench. She was born in Ogle County, Illinois on Dec. 5, 1866, the oldest child of Jacob Muench (1838-1907) and his wife Catherine (Bubb) Muench (1845-1920). The parents were natives of Pennsylvania, moving to Illinois in 1866 and coming to grant Township in 1881 where the father plurchased 160 acres in Section 26. They retired in 1903 and moved to Pilot Mound. The father was a veteran of the Civil War. Both are buried in Union Cemetery southeast of Boxholm. Cora taught one year of country school in Grant Township (Union District - 1883) prior to her marriage.
To Mr. and Mrs. Brod were born six children: Alvin (1885-1931), Mrs. Leonard E. (Lillian) Johnson (1887-1971), Mrs. S. Zane (N. Fern) Scott (b-1892), Mrs. Orin (Ruby) Jacobson (1897-1986), Mrs. Chester (Gladys) Carlson (b-1899), and Myrtle Lee (b-1906). Mr. and Mrs. Brod were members of the Renner Evangelical Church, but transferred their membership to the Boxholm Methodist Church on April 22, 1923.
Mr. Brod retired from farming in 1914 and moved into Boxholm. The land was then farmed by his oldest son, Alvin, until his death in 1931. The home place is today occupied by Mrs. Les (Elva) Pearce. Mr. Brod served Grant Township as a township trustee from 1905-1920. His death occurred on Jan. 12, 1938, aged 78 years. Mrs. Brod died on June 13, 1940, aged 73 years. Both are buried in Union Cemetery southeast of Boxholm. None of their descendants still reside within Grant Township.
