SMALLEY, HITSMAN

William "Bill" Smalley, age 53, of 642-140th Street in Pilot Mound, and formerly of Boone, died at his home on January 7, 2009. Funeral services will be Monday, January 12, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Open Bible with Rev. Phil Waldo officiating. Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery.
Bill was born in Ames on April 2, 1955, the son of Walter and Betty (Hill) Smalley. He graduated from Boone High School in 1974. On June 20, 1975, Bill married Cindy Hitsman in Boone. Bill worked in Environmental Services at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames since 2002. In earlier years, he was an animal caretaker for the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University and then worked in security in the Des Moines area. Bill also farmed in Boone County, raising cattle and growing hay. He was a member of the Open Bible Church and the Farm Bureau. He was a youth leader at his church and coached Boone Junior High Wrestling and assisted Varsity Wrestling for 15 years. Bill enjoyed being on his farm, fishing, and playing cards. He especially loved being with his children and grandchildren and attending their activities.
He is preceded in death by his father, an infant daughter, Rebecca Smalley, a niece, Heather McAlpine, half brother, Marion Harker, his father-in-law, Verne Hitsman, and a brother-in-law, Dennis Hitsman. Bill is survived by his wife, Cindy of Pilot Mound; four daughters, Sarah Peek and husband Todd of Chariton, Mindy Smalley of Iowa City, Christy Smalley and fiancé Dan Boyd of Boone, and Amanda Smalley of Boone; three grandchildren: Jacen Pearson, Rebekah Peek, and Cheyanne Peek, all of Chariton; his mother, Betty Smalley of Boone; a brother, Raymond Smalley and wife, Belinda of Cambridge; a sister, Candy McAlpine of Boone; three half brothers, Dennis Harker of West Des Moines, Daryl Harker of Perry, and Gary Harker of Warner Robins, Georgia; his mother-in-law, Ruth Hitsman of Boone; a brother-in-law, Terry Hitsman and wife Dawn of Boone; a sister-in-law, Jane Hitsman of Boone; and other relatives.
Friends may call at Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at the Open Bible Church from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m.
Memorials may be given to the family to be used at their discretion.
