Willis D. "Bill" Currell 1928-2003

Willis D. "Bill" Curell, 75, 615 S. Marshall St., Boone, died Sunday at his home of complications from diabetes.

Memorial services were held Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Boone, with the Rev. Duane Gibson officiating. Private graveside services and burial were held in Linwood Park Cemetery.

He was born Oct. 14, 1928, in Boone, the son of Howard E. and Sylvia (Martindale) Curell. He married Marilee Oxenford Aug. 13, 1950, at First Baptist Church.

He was a 1947 graduate of Boone High School and a 1949 graduate of Boone Junior College. He was employed for five years by the J.C. Penney Company in Boone and in Mitchell, S.D. In 1955, he began working at Redeker Furniture in Boone and continued with the company until his retirement in 1992. He was named "Boss of the Year" by the Boone Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1973.

For several years, he conducted baseball rules meetings for the Iowa High School Athletic Association. He umpired baseball for high schools and semi-pro teams. In 1992, he was inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches "Hall of Fame" in recognition of outstanding contributions to baseball.

He was active at the First Baptist Church and served on area and regional boards of Mid-American Baptist Churches. He was president of the regional churches in 1985 and 1986.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Cathy Curell of Boone; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Kim Curell of Boone and Kenneth and Catherine Curell of Boone; and four grandchildren, Andrew Curell, Ryan Curell, Nathan Curell and Jason Curell, all of Boone.

He was preceded in death by his father in June of 1955 and his mother in June of 2001; and one sister, Marilyn McGee.

Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association, Good Connections or Genesis Corporation.

Stark-Welin Funeral Directors of Boone was in charge of arrangements.
