John W. Lewis was born Jul, 31, 1853 to Lewis Lewis and Anthia Jones Lewis in Abertillery, Wales. He died Jun 26, 1935 in Boone, Iowa.
While still young he worked in coal mines with his father. He married Mary Ann Rees in 1875. They came to the United States in 1881. They had 14 children, four of which died in infancy.

John continued to work in coal mines, then was active in the U.M.W.A. for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter, Mae Flockhart, and son Tom. Surviving children are J. C. Lewis, James Lewis, Mrs. John Spence, Mrs. Dan Price, Mrs. Dan Jenkins, Lewis Lewis, Mrs. Harry Lantz, and Mrs. Robert McElroy. There are twenty living grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
