Laverne K. Henriksen, 88, of Madrid died on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames following a brief illness. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 13, 2011 at St. Malachy's Catholic Church in Madrid. The family will greet friends following the service. Burial will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D.

Laverne was born in Chicago in 1923. She moved with her family to Faith, S.D. at the age of 10. She lived and worked in Faith until marrying the love of her life, Lewin Henriksen, in 1948. Laverne spent the last 40 years of her life in Madrid. She was a member of St. Malachy's parish and the Senior Association of Madrid. She volunteered as a Patient Advocate at the Madrid Home and at the Greater Love mission in Madrid.

Laverne is survived by her children Michael (Susan) Henriksen of Ankeny and Diane (Joe) McNeil of Hartville, Missouri, her sister Dorothy (Bert) Boehrs of Sturgis, South Dalota, four step grandchildren, eight step great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Lewin, and her parents, Michael and Dorothy Heckmiller.

A very social person, Laverne loved spending time with her friends and family. She particularly valued the time she spent in her volunteer activities. Laverne often commented about what a full life she had and how grateful she was for that. We are grateful for the time we had with her.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Malachy's Catholic Church.
